HIM-144 Introduction to Health Information Management

An overview of the healthcare delivery system in the US and the business of health information management.  Students have an opportunity to explore careers such as medical coding, billing, auditing, privacy officer, and compliance. The structure and function of the electronic health record are examined as they relate to acute, outpatient and alternate care settings.  The course also presents numbering and filing systems for record storage and circulation. The impact of various laws, including HIPAA, are introduced, as is the role of AI (artificial intelligence).
