HIM-102 Basic Procedure Coding

A comprehensive study of basic HCPCS (the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) with a focus on CPT-4 (Current Procedural Terminology) and HCPCS Level 2 coding.  This course covers medical coding for surgery, radiology, pathology and laboratory services, evaluation/ management, medicine, anesthesia, and durable equipment. Students gain foundational knowledge in coding physicians' offices, the emergency department, and professional services rendered at both inpatient and outpatient facilities.  Students code cases using two codebooks and coding software.  Students are introduced to metacognition activities that prepare students with study and test taking skills.
