Medical Coding (Certificate)

The Medical Coding Certificate at BCC provides students with the foundational knowledge and technical skills needed to work as an entry-level medical coder in a medical care facility. Coursework in the program is designed to prepare students to sit for the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) offered by the AAPC (American Association of Professional Coders) examination.

Graduates of this program should be able to:

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the human body;
  • Show proficiency in the application of medical terminology;
  • Demonstrate strong computer skills; and
  • Be eligible to take the CPC (Certified Professional Coder) offered by the AAPC (American Association of Professional Coders) credentialing exam which will qualify a student for entry level coding positions in health care facilities and/or provider clinics and offices.
HIM courses are available fully online, despite being listed as a hybrid. The "hybrid" designation simply means that students have the option to attend a weekly lecture either in person or via Microsoft Teams. Participation in these sessions is entirely optional. You may continue to take the course fully online and asynchronously if that better suits your schedule.
