HSV-225 Addiction Treatment Modalities

An entry-level course for students interested in gaining an overview of basic addiction treatment. Content to be covered in this course include: Historic and current theories of addiction and treatment; the history of addiction treatment and recovery; an overview of current approaches to substance use treatment including both abstinence and harm reduction strategies; motivational interviewing; 12-step programs; and evidence-based approaches. Students will also learn about local community substance use treatment resources for individuals and family members. Treatment of dually diagnosed clients will also be discussed. Additionally, legal and ethical issues, as well as cultural competency will be emphasized throughout this course. Prerequisite: CRJ-108 or permission of the instructor.
