Studio Art (Certificate)

The Studio Art Certificate is a set of foundation courses designed to be the first step in a visual arts student’s education. The program introduces students to the studio art experience and immerses them into issues of art and design. Through the foundation courses students build knowledge of drawing and two & three dimensional design, as the basic vocabulary for all visual arts expression. The certificate prepares students with a broad foundation in the visual arts, art history and writing skills so that they may specialize in any area of fine arts or visual communication at the baccalaureate level.

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the Studio Art Certificate will be based on an open enrollment basis. Students who enroll in the certificate must fill out a college application and have a high school transcript (or equivalent).

Expected Outcomes

Graduates of this program should be able to:

  • Display physical and visual skills related to the contemporary drawing processes.
  • Apply the basic principles of two dimensional design through the manipulation of black, white and gray in studying the elements of design.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and use the vocabulary of the color wheel and the visible light spectrum. Illustrate the three characteristics of color: hue, value, and intensity.
  • Create interesting three dimensional sculptures using various materials, utilizing support drawings, plans, and maquettes.
  • Accurately interpret the figure from direct observation and identify proportional relationships with in the human form.
  • Identify works of art and architecture from antiquity to the late 19th century in terms of style, time period, geographic origin, and material.
  • Create a portfolio of art works.

Graduation Requirements

To earn a certificate in the program, a student must complete all 27 program credits, earn a 2.00 GPA, and demonstrate college level reading and writing.
